White House Petition Labels Catholic Church a “Hate Group”3 min read

What have Roman Catholics done to get themselves in such hot water? The Pope stated the Catholic Church’s beliefs regarding the Biblical mandate of same-sex marriage and rejecting gay marriage simultaneously. Apparently that behavior is deserving of being officially labeled as a hate group.

On their website, the White House is being petitioned to recognize Catholics as a hate group because of Pope Benedict XVI’s comments at the recent Christmas address to the College of Cardinals:

According to the biblical creation account, being created by God as male and female pertains to the essence of the human creature. This duality is an essential aspect of what being human is all about, as ordained by God. This very duality as something previously given is what is now disputed. The words of the creation account: “male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27) no longer apply. No, what applies now is this: it was not God who created them male and female—hitherto society did this, now we decide for ourselves. Man and woman as created realities, as the nature of the human being, no longer exist. Man calls his nature into question. From now on he is merely spirit and will. The manipulation of nature, which we deplore today where our environment is concerned, now becomes man’s fundamental choice where he himself is concerned. From now on there is only the abstract human being, who chooses for himself what his nature is to be. Man and woman in their created state as complementary versions of what it means to be human are disputed. [Source]

What’s so hateful about his comments? Isn’t he simply expressing his beliefs? Is that now criminal? What happened to the Freedom of Speech and the Freedom of Religion?

The petition on the White House’s website, which was created by Zach N. of Atlanta, GA on Christmas Day, condemned the Pope’s actions saying he “demeaned and belittled homosexual people around the world”. The petition went on to say that “using hateful language and discriminatory remarks, the Pope painted a portrait in which gay people are second-class global citizens.”

The petition currently has 1,733 votes, which is 23,267 votes short of the 25,000 signatures it needs by January 24th.

The Pope did not directly reference “gay marriage” or “homosexuality” at all. Rather, he defended the Church’s understanding of sexuality and “the true structure of the family, made up of father, mother and child.”

Pope Benedict XVI refuted the modern notion of sex as “a social role that we choose for ourselves,” rather than “a given element of nature” and “bodily identity that serves as a defining element of the human being”.

Just because you disagree with someone’s political or religious views doesn’t make either party a so-called “hate-group”. Regardless of whether you agree with the Pope’s opinions or not, you should take the petition’s goal of labeling the Catholic Church as a hate group seriously. This is a threat to every American – “If you voice your opinions and we find them offensive, we’re going to call you a hate group!”

  3. I have friends disputing this as hilarious & blissful & made up & copied graphics!
I’d like to know where you got this misinformation. It would be hilarious and blissful, if it weren’t so hateful.
Well, anytime reports on the Net impart shock value, I try to crossreference the data with more credible sources. So, for your penance, Frank, give us three Hail Marys and a Glory Be – while standing on your hands, buck naked, in the dead of night.

  5. Thanks for clarifying, Frank! I had misunderstood your original comment. I must admit I don’t see how your friends can think it’s bogus if it’s on the White House’s site, but go figure…
